Traditional food supply chains relied on simple linear barcodes that only identified product SKUs. When a food safety issue occurred or consumers sought details about origin, legacy barcodes provided zero contextual data. GS1 Digital Link bridges this gap by encoding the GTIN along with batch/lot numbers (AI 10),harvest dates (AI 11), and origin GLNs (AI 410) into a single 2D QR code.
Because it functions as a standard web URL, consumers can scan the QR code using any smartphone camera without downloading special apps. The FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Section 204 mandates enhanced traceability for foods listed on the Traceability List (FTL). Food business operators must maintain Key Data Elements (KDEs) across all Critical Tracking Events (CTEs), including harvesting, cooling, packing, shipping, and receiving.
